Line Arrays Have Many Special Features

The term "Line Array" is used to describe a loudspeaker system that has multiple loudspeaker units with the same characteristics arranged vertically to simulate a linear sound source. Sound propagating from line array speakers has very little dispersion in the vertical plane compared to standard loudspeakers operating as points, sources where the sound travels with wide dispersion angles in the horizontal and vertical planes. Therefore, the attenuation of sound pressure with distance is small.

Here is the content list:

  • Line array sound pressure is more consistent

  • Advantages of line array speakers

Line array sound pressure is more consistent

Sound waves travel in a spherical shape, spreading out horizontally and vertically. For every doubling of distance, the surface area for propagation quadruples. In other words, the sound intensity per unit area is reduced by a factor of four, and the sound pressure level is reduced by 6 dB.

Sound waves travel in a cylindrical shape, spreading out horizontally rather than vertically. For every doubling of the distance, the surface area of the spread front triples. In other words, the sound intensity per unit area is reduced by two times, and the sound pressure level is reduced by 3 decibels.

With Line Arrays, sound pressure is less affected by distance, resulting in clearer, more consistent sound reinforcement. Thus, sufficient sound pressure can be delivered to the background without being too loud in the foreground.

Standard loudspeakers (point sources) attenuate more with a distance - of 6 dB for every doubling of sound pressure. Therefore, distance has a greater effect on sound pressure, resulting in excessive volume in front of the stage.

Line array speakers attenuate less with a distance of - 3 dB for every doubling of sound pressure. Sound pressure is not affected as much by distance, so the volume in front of the stage does not need to be too loud.

Advantages of line array speakers

Compared with standard point source speakers, line array speakers have the following advantages.

1. Clear sound reinforcement

Unwanted reflections can be reduced, ensuring clearer sound enhancements even in highly reverberant spaces.

Since sound is also widely spread in the vertical plane, there will be a lot of reflections from roof and floor surfaces. These reflections are seen as reverb and make the enhanced sound less clear. Sound waves are scattered very little in vertical planes, significantly reducing the amount of reflection from roof and floor surfaces. With direct transmission from the array to the listener and no reflections, the enhanced sound is clearer overall.

2. The total output is smaller

As we can see, the total output of a line array speaker is smaller and there are fewer unwanted reflections, making the Feedback is unlikely to occur.

Whenever a certain sound pressure must be achieved at a specific distance, Line Array speakers increase the energy output of multiple speaker units, requiring less output energy per unit than standard point source speakers. As a result, the total input energy will be significantly less than using standard loudspeakers, which means feedback is less likely to occur.
